AS A NEW TEACHER, I STRUCTURED MY WORD STUDY PLANS WITH A MONDAY - FRIDAY ROUTINE WHERE ALL STUDENTS COMPLETED THE SAME ASSIGNMENT EACH DAY. On Mondays, students were introduced to their lists, on Fridays, *if* we were in class and hadn’t missed a day of activities, students tested on their words.
Many of us are trained by our word study programs to structure our time this way…BUT WHAT IF THE WAY WE WERE TRAINED JUST DOESN’T WORK?
I found that a cyclical rotating schedule based on the number of activities I wanted to incorporate instead of the number of days in the week allowed so much more flexibility in my word study routine…
and more importantly, the word study PLAN did NOT suffer because of expected or unexpected interruptions to our schedule. With a new way of thinking about how to implement our schedule, students actually had time to get meaningful activities done.
